May 21, 2014 General Assembly Meeting Minutes

SLOAN ELEMENTARY PTO GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING

Wednesday, May 21, 2014

9:30 AM

WELCOME:  The meeting was called to order by President Jennifer Taylor at 9:35.

IN ATTENDANCE:  The meeting was attended by 7 Members of the PTO and Principal Burns.  PTO President Jennifer Taylor and PTO Co-Secretary Debby Rhea were also present.

MARCH MEETING MINUTES:  The Minutes from the March 18, 2014 meeting were approved with a motion made by Lori Henninger, seconded by Jeanine Snyder, and favored by all.

VICE PRESIDENT’S ASSEMBLIES REPORT:  Due to the passing of Tom Diez, this year’s Field Day assembly will feature Jack Hanna videos and snacks (pretzels and water).

TREASURER’S REPORT:  Those in attendance were provided with the most recent copy of the Budget.  However, not all expense reports and fundraiser revenue had yet been received.  A summary will be provided in an eNews Publication before the end of the school year.

UPDATES:  The basketball court construction came to a halt during the abnormally cold winter.  It is expected to be completed before the start of school in August.

RECENT EVENTS:  President Jennifer Taylor briefly reviewed the PTO sponsored and supported activities that had taken place since the March meeting, 13 in all (March Math Madness, Science Night, the Father-Daughter Dance, Spring Homeroom Parties, Third Grade Garden Club Meetings, Family Movie Night, the Science & Art Fair, a Bake Sale, the Staff Appreciation Luncheon, Mother-Son Kickball Madness, the Spring Book Fair Fiesta, the Duck Race, and Relay for Life.  There was also a week-long Five Below Fundraiser and 2 Market Day sales.

Relay for Life Chair Chris Sadoski reported that approximately $3200 was raised for Relay for Life by Sloan families.

UPCOMING EVENTS: 

Field Day is on May 30th.

Bus Driver Appreciation Day is on June 2nd.  Students are encouraged to make signs of appreciation to display at their bus stops.

Fifth Grade Farewell is on June 5th from 6:00 – 8:30 PM.  Co-Chair Jill Cooper shared that there will be a DJ in the Lobby, a photo booth, games in the Gym, and food in the Cafeteria.  Volunteers are needed to help decorate and set up the event beginning at 3:30 on June 5th until 5:45.  Volunteers will also be needed to work rotating one hour shifts at stations during the event.  Students will receive a memory book and a special gift at the end of the night.  The next Fifth Grade Farewell Planning Meeting will be on Wednesday, May 28th at 9:30 AM in the LGI Annex.

COMMITTEE CHAIR APPOINTMENTS AND VACANCIES

Due to the event on April 9th at the High School, the April 10th PTO Voting Meeting was cancelled.  Rather than rescheduling the meeting, Members were invited to take a poll to allowing the unopposed Committee Chair Candidates to be appointed to their positions for the 2014-2015 school year.  One hundred percent of responders were in favor.  Those in attendance at the meeting were presented with a working list of next year’s Committee Chairs. Once finalized, that list will be available at sloanpto.com.

Committees that are in need of additional Co-Chairs are as follows:

Book Fair – Co-Chair(s) to work with Sandra Torres-Martinez and Beth Davis

Emergency Preparedness Kits – Co-Chair to work with Theresa Gutierrez

Fall Family Fun Night – Co-Chair(s) to work with Erica Yurt and Amie Fricke

Photography – Co-Chairs to work with Diana Harvey

Talent Show – Co-Chair(s) to work with Beth Davis

CO-SECRETARY VOTING

Debby Rhea was reelected to another one year term following a nomination by Jennifer Taylor that was seconded by Jenna Heberle and favored by all.

FAREWELL TO OUTGOING FIFTH GRADE PARENTS

In addition to being treated to festive cupcakes, delicious fresh fruit, and lemonade, outgoing 5th grade parents Jill Cooper and Kim Anderson were thanked for their time and service to Sloan, wished well on the next leg of their journey, and presented with cactuses as a parting gift.  Jill Cooper thanked the PTO for its strong leadership, dedication, and commitment to serving Sloan staff and students and expressed appreciation for a job well done.  Principal Burns echoed that sentiment and thanked the PTO for bringing a wide variety of family-oriented, community-building activities to the school and commended the PTO for another enjoyable year of success.

ADJOURNMENT

The meeting adjourned at 10:15, followed by snacking and socializing.
