PTO Vacancies

The PTO is in need of volunteers to chair

Fall Family Fun Night, scheduled for Friday, October 11, and the Science & Art Fair, scheduled for Friday, April 25 during the upcoming school year. Fall Family Fun Night is a fun kick-off event that celebrates our Sloan community and the beginning of the new school year. The Science & Art Fair is a special opportunity for our children to showcase their creativity, grasp of the scientific method, and artistic skills. Both are historically meaningful events, and we'd like for the tradition to continue. We are also looking for a volunteer to serve as Co-Chair with Jodi Horvath on the Kindergarten Welcoming and New Student Orientation Committee, as Jodi will be moving on from Sloan at the end of next school year. If you are interested in any of these committees, please contact Debby Rhea at kafking@hotmail.com.

The NED Show Assembly

On Tuesday, May 13th, Sloan Elementary is bringing the high energy, tons-of-fun NED Show to school to educate and wow our students. The NED Show is designed to promote positive attitudes, better behavior, and improved academic achievement through character education. NED stands for:

Never give up. (focus and persistence)
Encourage others. (kindness and shared learning)
Do your best. (diligence and excellence)

The NED Show uses humor, audience participation, magic tricks, and yo-yos to deliver a hands-on, visual lesson that encourages children to work hard in their classrooms and always "do their best" at school. It also reinforces our district's Olweus anti-bullying program by emphas
izing the importance of good character and helping others. After the assembly, yo-yos will be available for sale to students so the concepts they learn can be reinforced and applied at home and in their daily lives. Additional information about the show and yo-yo sales will be coming home from the school's Administrative Team soon.

Bus Driver Appreciation Day

The majority of our children travel safely to and from Sloan on a school bus most days. From the first day of school to the last, we entrust our children's safety (on the roads and inside the vehicles) to the professionals driving the buses and vans that serve our school. Not only do they provide a transportation service, but also smiling faces that help our children leave home to begin their days and comfort to parents. They are responsible for managing large groups of children in close confines and bringing our precious children back home to us at the end of the day (in all weather!).  For all of these reasons and more, we have Bus Driver Appreciation Day!

This year, Bus Driver Appreciation Day will be held on Monday, June 3 during morning bus arrival. All Sloan students will participate in making cards for the bus and van drivers during Art class. We are also extending an invitation to students to help make the celebration extra special by signing up to make hand-held signs, line the sidewalk to greet the drivers as they arrive, and/or deliver treat bags to them. We also invite parents to assist in supervising our cheering kids during this time. Due to safety concerns, there will be a limit to the number of participants. Adult and/or student volunteers will need to be at Sloan at 8:15 AM. If interested, please call or text Bus Driver Appreciation Day Chair Beth McCormick at 724.961.9646 or email bethmccormick12@comcast.net with the participant's names and contact information (phone number and email address). The deadline for expressing interest is Friday, May 24th.  ***Volunteers will be selected on a first come, first served basis.***
