Message from Your Outgoing President

It's been a great pleasure and a tremendous learning experience to have served as our PTO's President for the past two years and worked with Wendy Lindeman, Larry Nicolette, Jan Cavalier, Debby Rhea, and Jenna Heberle. As we move into transitioning from one Board to the next, it would be a missed opportunity not to reflect and express my gratitude.

What I've appreciated the most is having had the opportunity to witness our school community work in collaboration, without self interest and in spite of our differences, to achieve shared goals, all of which benefit our children. Field trips, Homeroom Parties, family events, educational assemblies, visiting authors, Book Fairs, Holiday Shops, resource supplements, Deer Valley, Fifth Grade Farewell, the Father/Daughter Dance, the Science & Art Fair, Science Night, a state of the art website, informative newsletters, a new playground last year and a new basketball court this year, a dedicated PTO display case in the kindergarten hallway, Wear a Hat for Cancer Day, and most of all, parents, grandparents, guardians, teachers, and our beautiful children joining together to give and help when someone is in need. Seeing this kind of generosity of spirit is something I had on my Bucket List. Now that I've witnessed it and been a part of it, it's a tradition, a pay it forward of sorts, that I'll continue practicing.

I think it's important not only to thank you ALL for your support of the PTO and your volunteerism, which takes on so many forms, but also to send out a very special thank you to all of our 5th grade parents who will be moving on to the Middle School. You are our veterans and have carried the responsibility of upholding traditions and keeping them energized. You've contributed so much as volunteers and friends. You will be missed, and you are truly appreciated.

To our new President and Vice President, Jenn Taylor and Pam Rowell, you will be amazing in these roles. Thank you for your enthusiastic and willing commitment. We're lucky to have you both. Wendy Lindeman and Debby Rhea, thank you so much for staying on to serve as Co-Secretaries. Jenna Heberle, thank you so much for rocking it this year as a Co-Secretary and for stepping up to take care of the website next year. Larry Nicolette, you made accounting cool, and you are now the face of the "PTO Dads Movement." Thank you!

Very Sincerely,

Michelle McFall

PTO Vacancies

The PTO is in need of volunteers next year to chair Fall Family Fun Night, scheduled for Friday, October 11, and the Science & Art Fair, scheduled for Friday, April 25. Fall Family Fun Night is a fun kick-off event that celebrates our Sloan community and the beginning of the new school year. The Science & Art Fair is a special opportunity for our children to showcase their creativity, grasp of the scientific method, and artistic skills. Both are historically meaningful events, and we'd like for the tradition to continue. If you are interested in chairing either of these committees, please contact Debby Rhea at kafking@hotmail.com.

Volunteer Clearances

As a final courtesy reminder, please be aware that some volunteers' clearances were not added to the master spreadsheet and therefore cannot be accounted for. Most recently, this was an issue for field trip chaperones and Field Day helpers, who were not permitted to volunteer as planned. For those who have submitted clearances, please check with Sloan Secretary Felicia Dusetzina to see if they are on record in the office. For those who have not yet obtained clearances, but plan to, please make copies for your own records before turning them in. Links to the district's Volunteer Policy and Clearance Forms may be found here

Duck Race is a Duck Race

"Sunny" Success!

After a second attempt, the weather cooperated, and we had some sunny weather to hold our annual Duck Race at Pearson Creek on May 15th! The students had a great time watching the ducks battle it out down the creek, with a winning duck and "lucky duck" winner for each grade's race. Afterwards, students enjoyed a treat of popcorn and freeze pops in the yard and had some fun time to play with their friends.

Contributions from Sloan families and faculty totaled a whopping $3,736.49 for the American Cancer Society!!! These donations were then sent on to represent our own "Team Sloan" at the Relay for Life on May 18th.  Mrs. Vitale's first grade raised the most money and won a party that will take place this week. Congratulations!

Thank you so much to all the Sloan families and staff for the very generous donations to make the Duck Race a huge success! To view pictures from this festive day, please click here.

Relay for Life Relay For Life

Each year, I am in awe of the creativity, passion, and generosity on display at Murrysville's Relay for Life.  This year was no exception.

Murrysville youth, businesses, and organized teams come out in droves to celebrate life through laughter and enjoying one another's company, mourn those who have lost their fight with cancer, and raise money to support those who still fight. Team Sloan raised $4326.49 which included Duck Race donations and individual team fundraising efforts.  Team Sloan was the 5th highest team for fundraising, achieving silver status again this year (status for teams who raise over $3500)!  Many thanks are extended to all the families and teachers who supported this worthy cause through donations and/or attending the event. Your generosity is overwhelming.

I'd also like to recognize and give special thanks to Team Sloan members Jennifer Boyer, Kara Bertucci, Lori Hall, Wendy Lindeman, Maria Franco, Carrie Lucci, Janice Martin, Dennis Murphy, Tim Murphy, Susie Piekarski-Reese, Pam Rowell, Jennifer Taylor, and Annette Smiach. I was proud to walk beside them in our community fight against cancer and look forward to next year! (To view pictures from the Relay, please click here.)

If you or a loved one needs help in your fight against cancer, please go to www.cancer.org to take advantage of the support programs offered by the American Cancer Society. Best wishes for a healthy and happy summer!

Field Day

Thanks to everyone who sweated it out on Field Day last Friday, manning stations and activities and assisting with snacks and water. The students look forward to this day of fun all year-long, and it wouldn't be possible without the time and dedication of our prized volunteers.  We were blessed by Mother Nature this year, perhaps too blessed. Hopefully, any and all souvenir sunburns are clearing up! To view pictures of the fun in action, click here. If you have pictures of your own to share, please email them to sloanptophotos@gmail.com, and they will be added to the photo gallery. Thanks!

Bus Driver Appreciation Day

Sloan PTO Appreciates its Bus Drivers!  Handmade signs and bobbing yellow and blue balloons greeted Sloan bus drivers and traffic security guards, Nick and Steve, when they arrived at the school on Monday, kicking off this year's Bus Driver Appreciation Day celebration.

Student volunteers met each bus driver with a personalized card made and signed in Art class by their passengers and a Bus Driver Survival Kit created by Committee Chair Beth McCormick containing (among many other items) a Tootsie Roll so they can "roll down the highway," a button "to push to mute the noise," and a crayon so they can color their days bright and sunny. Other families throughout the district planned to greet their drivers with signs at their bus stops.

Photos from the school are posted on the Sloan PTO Website and can be viewed here. If you have pictures of your own to share, email them to sloanptophotos@gmail.com, and they'll be added to the photo gallery.

Excess for Recess

Please keep our Sloan teachers and students in mind if you are cleaning out unwanted board games, building materials, puzzles, books, and card games this summer. We will be accepting donations for Excess for Recess, an event which we hold every other year. On Friday, November 8, teachers will "shop" (with vouchers) in the Excess for Recess store to replenish their closets and shelves with items for students to play with during indoor recess.

If you have questions, please contact the Excess for Recess Co-Chairs:
